Test Riders

Over the next couple months I’m going to be getting some people to help me out testing things.  The first of the group is going to be Scootie, and I set him up a little page under the Reviews section.  Check it out!

Cool site. I was surprised when I ran across it. You should cover some original coaster brake reviews. Some of the old riders still ride coaster brake. I ride with a guy that rides coaster at Chandler bike park every week. 25 years ago I used to ride coaster but switched over to freewheel toward the end of my competitive days. I have been riding again for a couple of years (45 years old now) and have the urge to build up a coaster or freehub wheel. I was curious if there have been any coaster brake technology advances other than freehubs. I know it is considered primitive, but I am still interested. I am also interested in building a freecoaster wheel.

We used to weld the sprocket on and the coaster brake arm to take away any slop from a loose fit. Any where there was a caged bearing we would pull the cage and add bearings to have more of the race covered with bearings to make the race last longer. We used grease to hold the freebearings in place during assembly. Another thing we did was to take the brake shoes to a wire wheel to soften all of the edges so that when braking there was smooth braking. We also built or wheels with an outside cross four on the spokes.
